Weight saving

Weight saving

A month or so back, a generous friend insisted I borrow his new GH5 for a couple of weeks…

I never expected that it would make such a change in the way I work. I had purchased my own within a week and more lenses are gradually arriving…

The headlines are that the movie quality from this tiny, image stabilised content is really quite extraordinary and dare I say it, far better than my Sony Cinema camera, the PMW-F5. With bitrates of 400mbs in UHD with 10-bit Log, there really is nothing to touch this for close, wide angle and documentary work. Add to this the form factor, the low weight (around 550g for the body!) and the excellent OLED viewfinder and this make a compulsive small movie camera that can be used like a stills camera (held to they eye).

Is there a down side? To be fair there is - while stills are excellent, the AF system is unusable for any form of tracking shot, so no danger of replacing my EOS cameras for stills photography.
